Imagine

Take a moment to read this uplifting post on Exploratorium.
It makes a beautiful connection between art and science, and the key ingredient is imagination.

“Discovery is what makes science interesting for me, because I can continue to “discover” so many new things for myself. I’m particularly fascinated how innovation and imagination work together in the realm of science, not only in generating a hypothesis but also in providing the means to prove or disprove it. My own theory is that little would be discovered at all without imagination and its cousin curiosity.”

    Thanks for this!
These tree photos are beautiful; I see that both have misty elements, which makes me think of mystery. It’s interesting to think of old maps, drawn before North and South America were “discovered”, and how society tended to define unknown space as “the edge of the world” or “there be dragons”, where mystery was seen as the boundary of exploration rather than the beginning of it. I’m glad they didn’t stop there!

I totally agree. It was the element of mystery that drew me to the images, especially the first. I was thinking of how to express the part in your post where you mention the budding musicians you teach - when they let go of their fears and trust their feelings. To me, that’s like walking into the mist, the deep unknown, with only your intuition as a guide. The primal part of yourself objects, much like the sceptics and naysayers in any field of exploration or discovery. But if you persist and hold to your trust, you will eventually have a breakthrough or reach some spot of enlightenment.

Your post gave me plenty to reflect on, so I used the second image to illustrate that.

I thought I should stop by and let you know that my blog name has changed from “exploratorium” to “the unwound road”. Check out my post entitled “The bear went up the mountain” if you want to know the whole story…
